Node scope

Federated computing, data and digital services for European research

EOSC Node | Italy connects national research infrastructures, service providers, e-infrastructures and repositories to the EOSC Federation.

The Node integrates high-performance computing, cloud, storage, data analysis, catalogues, authentication and training capabilities. Its objective is to enable cross-Node workflows, FAIR research outputs, secure analysis of sensitive data, and the responsible adoption of artificial-intelligence and quantum technologies.

Its scientific scope includes HPC, cloud and quantum computing, astrophysics, life sciences, physics, environmental research and AI/ML applications.

Responsible organisation

ICSC — Italian Research Center on High Performance Computing, Big Data and Quantum Computing

ICSC coordinates and operates the Node, federating resources from more than 50 participating organisations.

Access principle

Public information, federated access

Public pages and catalogues are anonymous. Protected services use EOSC-compliant federated authentication and must state whether access is open, moderated or restricted.

Node Exchange resources

Access the Lab and discover Node resources

EOSC Node | Italy provides a collaborative Lab with integrated analytical services and a public catalogue for discovering the wider collection of services, datasets, software, workflows and research products contributed to the Node.

Lab services

One environment, five connected services

The following public pages explain the purpose and access conditions of each service. The services are launched from inside the EOSC Node Italy Lab after authentication and membership approval.

Cloud Computing Platform

Moderated Lab

Execute scientific methods and workflows on managed, scalable computing resources without operating the underlying infrastructure.

UAP: Requires EOSC-AAI or supported authentication and approved Lab membership. Computing allocations, method availability and quotas may apply.

AUP: D4Science AUP, security and fair-use limits, software licences and method-specific conditions.

JupyterLab

Moderated Lab

Develop and run notebooks, code and data analyses in a browser-based environment connected to shared storage and managed computing.

UAP: Requires EOSC-AAI or supported authentication and approved Lab membership. Service capacity and session limits may apply.

AUP: D4Science AUP and all licences, attribution requirements and data-protection conditions attached to processed resources.

RStudio

Moderated Lab

Prepare and analyse data, develop R scripts, create graphics and document reproducible results through a browser-based development environment.

UAP: Requires EOSC-AAI or supported authentication and approved Lab membership. Service capacity and session limits may apply.

AUP: D4Science AUP and all licences, attribution requirements and data-protection conditions attached to processed resources.

Workspace

Moderated Lab

Store, organise and share data, code, documents and results through a managed file space integrated with the analytical services.

UAP: Requires EOSC-AAI or supported authentication and approved Lab membership. Access to shared items depends on permissions and assigned roles.

AUP: D4Science AUP, storage quotas, sharing rules and the conditions attached to every stored or shared resource.

Social Networking

Moderated Lab

Discuss scientific activities, exchange updates, share research resources and collaborate with other members of the Lab community.

UAP: Requires EOSC-AAI or supported authentication and approved Lab membership. Available features depend on community context and assigned role.

AUP: D4Science AUP, professional conduct, privacy, intellectual-property and community-moderation rules.

Node Catalogue

Discover the wider collection of Node resources

The public catalogue remains the authoritative discovery point for the other services, datasets, software, workflows and research products contributed by participating providers. Access and reuse conditions are stated in the individual record.

Node Catalogue

Public discovery

Discover the services, datasets, software, workflows and other research products currently offered by EOSC Node | Italy.

UAP: Catalogue records are publicly readable. Contribution or curation functions may require EOSC AAI and an assigned role.

AUP: The infrastructure policy and any provider-specific conditions linked by the individual record.

Data repositories and research products

Record-specific

Discover and reuse Open Access publications, datasets and other research artefacts exposed by national repositories.

UAP: Public records and open resources are anonymous; protected content must provide an EOSC-AAI access route or clearly state its provider authorisation process.

AUP: The licence, attribution requirements and provider conditions displayed in each catalogue record.

HPC, cloud and storage

EOSC AAI + allocation

Provide federated computing and storage through national HPC centres, cloud providers and ISO 27001-certified cloud regions.

UAP: Authenticate through EOSC AAI. Eligibility, approval, quotas, allocation periods and provider requirements must be stated in the selected resource record.

AUP: Provider AUP, security rules, fair-use limits and applicable infrastructure conditions.

Reproducible workflows

EOSC AAI

Execute containerised analytical workflows, including REANA pipelines, across federated resources and close to large datasets.

UAP: Authenticate through EOSC AAI; workflow execution, resource sizes and allocations follow the conditions of the selected service.

AUP: Service and provider AUPs, software licences, data conditions and resource-consumption limits.

Interactive environments and VREs

EOSC AAI

Use Jupyter notebooks, interactive analysis environments, Virtual Research Environments and collaborative research tools.

UAP: Authenticate through EOSC AAI. Individual environments may be open, moderated or restricted; the relevant record must state the applicable membership rule.

AUP: Infrastructure AUP, environment-specific rules, quotas and conditions attached to processed data and software.

Training and collaboration

Public + EOSC AAI

Support education, skills development, file synchronisation and sharing, and collaboration across research communities.

UAP: Open learning materials may be anonymous; personalised workspaces and collaboration functions require EOSC AAI and may have community-specific membership rules.

AUP: Infrastructure or provider AUP, copyright and licensing conditions, storage quotas and collaboration rules.

How to read access status

Public Available anonymously, although contribution functions may require authentication. Open EOSC AAI An EOSC user may authenticate and access under the stated limits. Moderated / allocation Access requires a request, approval or resource allocation. Restricted Access is limited to an identified community or project.

The individual resource page or catalogue record is authoritative. It must name the provider, purpose, access route, AUP, UAP, licence and any quota or eligibility conditions.

Scientific impact

Federation in practice

Cross-Node use cases demonstrate how federated resources can support reproducible workflows and secure distributed analysis.

Federating CERN REANA pipelines

Execute containerised analyses where very large scientific datasets are held, reducing unnecessary movement of data and supporting reproducible near-data computation.

Multi-centric AI validation

Contribute to a secure cross-Node environment for validating an AI model for prostate-cancer screening against data held by different hospitals.

Federated sensitive-data analysis

Combine interactive notebooks, distributed HPC resources and certified cloud regions where the applicable authorisations and safeguards are in place.

Node access and policies

Clear conditions before access

The landing page and public resource metadata are available without login. Authentication is required only when entering a protected environment or invoking a protected service.

EOSC AAI access

Select Sign in with EOSC AAI, choose an EOSC-compatible or academic identity offered by the access service, authenticate with the identity provider, and return to the requested resource.

Open the EOSC-compliant login

Acceptable Use Policy

D4Science-hosted services use the combined Access and Acceptable Use Policy. Federated providers may apply their own AUP, security rules and resource limits, linked from the resource record.

Read the D4Science AUP

User Access Policy

Each resource record must state whether access is public, open through EOSC AAI, moderated, allocated or restricted, and identify eligibility, approval, quotas and duration where applicable.

Review resource access conditions

Resource conditions

Datasets, archives, software and research products retain their licences, attribution requirements and provider conditions. A product licence may provide its AUP/UAP where appropriate.
